A Happy, Throwback Running Playlist

Usually, when I’m running, I listen to Pandora and just select a radio station that I think will motivate me for the next 45 minutes. Pit Bull Radio is a favorite and recently it’s been Workout Radio. However happy and upbeat, or pumped up the song is, it’s rare that one will really get me excited about it.

Ergo…I’ve started back into the crazy world of making playlists. Considering I have just about no music on my iTunes (I lost all 5500 songs when my college computer died), I’ve been trying to be selective on which songs I actually download.

I made this playlist while looking for some motivating throwbacks. Songs that you don’t really hear on the radio today and songs that bring me back to training on teams in high school and college.

Brent…thought this also made a great 5AM road trip playlist, so guess what we jammed to on our trip out to Michigan?! After that interesting car ride, I’m going to change it to an after 8AM playlist because I need my coffee before I listen to Brent belting out What a Feeling. It was a very enthusiastic rendition.

Barracuda, in this play list, was a great decision. I was just about sprinting when that song came on.

The Good Ole Days

Believe it or not, I have been snapping pictures and writing posts in my head…but not getting to the point where it ends up here. When I look through my photos for a few to add up, there are just too many options now….

For example: Brent has been stopping at every Sears, Home Depot and Lowes that he can find just to take a look at the lawn mowers they have. He is DYING for a man mower. I always joke with him and tell him that we are going to get him an old school push mower with the rotating wheel, like my grandfather used to cut his lawn with. He gets frustrated, I laugh and we usually walk away from the mowers.

Well, this weekend we headed over to the house to do some work and cut the lawn. Brent went into the shed and pulled out the gas powered mower that hasn’t been started up for over two years. In fear of a catastrophe, he discovered another option. The old school mower…And that is what her used.

How fantastic is that. Those little guys actually work really well.

The Workout

Last night Maggie and I headed to our old high school to do a sprint workout. I am in the middle of training for my second half marathon and really feel like I need some work on the speed aspect of it. Unfortunately, that also means that some hill sprints will be making it into the mix.

As we were jogging around for our warm up, we were chatting about all of the games that we had played on this field and how in shape we once were. Even the smell of the turf field brought back some serious memories.

We warmed up with a mile run and then set ourselves up for some sprints on the turf. The workout ended up being:

It was really the first time that I had SPRINTED since I played field hockey in college….which has been a little while. My body was definitely not used to going all out but it felt great to floor it.

You forget how long 100 yards is though…The cone we set at 25 yards…

After the sprints we cooled down in another two laps and went home for some dinner.

This Morning

This morning has been crazy already. I ate some peanut butter and honey on toast, started reviewing some contracts for work and need to get out the door to drive to Cape Cod for a meeting.

After the meeting, I am driving back any getting on the road for a 15 hour drive to Michigan! A much needed little vacation to hang out with Brent’s parents.

Off to get the day going!

Popcorn Cookies and Clockwork Abs

Yesterday I told you that I was working on a clockwork abs workout and here you go! The whole time I was actually doing the workout I was trying to come up with a clever name for it…Like “Rockin Abs Around the Clock” or “Rock Hard Abs Around the Clock” but I couldn’t come up with something that just seemed to roll off the tongue. Sooo Clockwork Abs it is.

For this workout, you simply go down the list of exercises and do each for a minute straight, except for the ab circles clockwise and counter clockwise, do each for 30 seconds. If you get to the point where you can complete them for a minute straight each…that’s amazing. I have included some videos to go along with the exercises to clarify what I’m talking about but couldn’t find a few…so I have described them. If you have trouble understanding…let me know I will try to clarify 🙂

Side to Side Pendulum

Ab Circles Clockwise and Counterclockwise: Lie on your back and lift your legs a few inches off the ground.  With your legs completely straight the entire time, begin drawing a large circle with your feet in either a clockwise or counter clockwise manner. Your arms should be placed in the same position as the Side to Side Pendulum.

Ab Circles Alternating: Staring with your feet at the top most position in the ab circles, move your feet in a clockwise motion. When you reach the top mot position again, pause and move them back in a counter-clockwise motion. Continue pausing at the top and alternating between clockwise and counter-clockwise.

V-Crunch

V-Crunch Alternating Sides: Get into your starting V-Crunch position with your knees pulled in and your shoulders off the ground. Instead of extending your legs straight out, twist your body onto your left hip and extend your legs out to the right side. Bring them back to the middle with your body centered. Then twist your body onto the right hip and extend your legs out to the left side. Bring the back to the middle with your body centered.

Please let me know if any of this is confusing. I will keep looking for the appropriate videos if the description is confusing.

I had Maggie do this workout with me yesterday and she loved it. You don’t have to count how many you are completing, just push yourself through each minute and get as many reps in as you can. The workout is also going to target every muscle in your abs. We are both feeling sore today and looooove it.

Popcorn Cookies

A little while ago I can up with the idea of putting popcorn into cookies. I know this isn’t an original idea but it was in my head 🙂 I added some white chocolate chips and cranberries to the mix because I am really a big fan of cranberries in cookies (if you couldn’t tell). They are extremely healthy and packed with flavor. When my family was eating them, they at first weren’t really sure what to make of them because they have such a different texture in comparison to a typical cookie. My mom thought they should be cut into bars and be called a snack cookie or something to the effect. They are extremely crunchy is what I’m getting at. But delicious. I really recommend you give them a try if you are looking for something that is sweet but on the healthy side. Because they are so crunchy, it takes you a little longer to eat…which isn’t a bad thing if you are looking to cut down on the number of cookies you are eating 🙂

Cranberry Popcorn Cookies

Ingredients:

1 Stick of Butter, Softened 1 Cup Sugar
1 Egg 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
1 1/4 Cups Flour 1/2 Teaspoon Baking Soda
Salt to Taste 3/4 Cup Popcorn Kernals
1 Tablespoon Canola Oil Pinch of Salt
1/2 Cup Dried Cranberries 1/2 Cup White Chocolate Chips

Directions:

1. In a sauce pan, add in a tablespoon of canola oil and the popcorn kernals. Over medium heat, heat until popcorn popping has slowed down. Make sure you put a cover on the sauce pan or your will have oil and popcorn EVERYWHERE!

2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

3. Add in the egg and vanilla.

4. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking soda and salt. Then gradually add it into the wet mixture. Top it off with the lightly CRUSHED popcorn, chocolate chips and cranberries.

5. Spoon dough onto cookies sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake them at 350 degrees for approximately 14 minutes. You want them to be slightly browned.

Just let them cool before you start tasting them, but I was really happy with the way that they came out. Such a different take on a cookie. They were sweet and healthy at the same time.

And just a little update on the Oreo, my little problem child. She is doing much better. She is walking around and has a ton more energy. She still won’t attempt going up stairs but in just a few days she will be as good as new 🙂

A Snowy Winter Wonderland

Christmas morning brought a light snow to Mass, which was delightful because I really have missed the snow. It also begged the question, “What would have Brent done if it didn’t snow??” I guess we will never know!

Last night, brought the biggest snow of the season…about 6-7 inches. FUNNN. So the street is officially a little winter wonderland. The first big snow of the season is always a fun one because it hasn’t gotten annoying or brown yet.

I didn’t really get up early enough to get the crazy pretty pictures when all of the snow is still clinging to the branches. It looks amazing. But, the real excitement was Oreo seeing snow for the FIRST TIME EVER! She has always been a Florida puppy so I was pretty excited to see what her reaction was going to be. She is a bit of a nervous nelly and my bet was that she would go on a barking rampage. Nope.

Bacon can’t seem to get enough of the snow. It’s like he was born to run around in it. Oreo did have a it of trouble because it came up to her chest in some areas…which made walking around a bit more difficult. Annnd full speed face plants a little more plausible.

She loved it though and I had the best time watching the two of them run around in the snow.

After snow festivities, Brent and I headed to the gym because I am determined to get this booty into photo taking shape. It’s been a little while since we have had the time to get a workout in and I was itching to get back there. I started it off with a 3 mile run that I ended up finishing in just over 25 minutes. I was really really happy with that because I was starting to feel winded as I was unpacking things and was really expecting the worst.

After the run, I tackled a quick little arm circuit to get back into everything. The shoulder press was a bit of a struggle for me towards the end, but then again…that’s never really been a strong point for me.

Arm Toning Circuit

Tomorrow, the plan is a leg circuit…and I feel some box jumps and lunges coming on. Fun Fun!! Then, I am going to start incorporating some full body circuits. I really wanted to ease myself back into the circuit training and so that is the plan.

Next, cookie baking and relaxing.

Pumpkin Mini Pies

So I might have gone a little pumpkin crazy this weekend. The Pumpkin Muddy Buddies I made for a specific little project that I’m going to hold off on telling you about until a little later, but these Pumpkin Mini Pies were really just because I’ve gone a little pumpkin nuts. Seriously. And in my fridge I have another half a can of pumpkin puree that will need to be used in the near future…it’s an endless cycle.

These ended up being a perfect little  dessert to cap off a meal.  They are small and satisfying. Making pies have always scared me a bit and I blame Mama C for that. Completely. Dont’ get me wrong, Mama C makes the world’s best pies. But when I was growing up, all I heard about around the holidays was how hard pies were to make. It’s so easy to mess up a pie crust. She even taught my aunts how to make pies. Simply reinforcing the fact that they shouldn’t be messed with.

So these are my,”Testing the Water with a toe” Pies. Mini Pies with pre-made pie crust. Haha.

Ingredients:

2 9-inch Pie Crusts 1/4 Cup Pumpkin Puree
1/4 Cup Marscapone Cheese 1/4 Teaspoon Pumpkin Spice
1/8 Teaspoon Nutmeg 1 Egg

Directions:

1. Mix up the pumpkin puree, marscapone cheese, pumpkin spice and nutmeg.

2. Roll out the pie crusts and use a cookie cutter to cut leaf, ghost, pumpkin or any other shapes. You will need pairs of each so make sure you cut out at least 2 of each. Also, the larger the center the better. If you have arms, legs or leaf  stems that stick out, they will be harder to fill up. Cover the piece of pie crust with the pumpkin mix.

3. Top with the matching half and lightly press around the edges. Then take a fork and seal the edges.

4. Mix your egg with 1 Tablespoon of water and brush it over your pie. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar. Bake at 375 for 15 minutes until browned.

And DONE! They are really quite easy to make. It was about 15 minutes of prep time and 15 in the oven. Not bad for these little delectables. They are really delicious and I’m loving the pumpkin filling. As I was mixing it up, I was thinking about how great it would be as a dip as well. You could definitely use this mix as a holiday dip for some pretzels.

 

Do not worry though, the pumpkin frenzy is not even close to over. We have of a month left of this fantastic little yumster. I’m trying to figure out if pumpkin is acceptable at Christmas??

Anyways, yesterday was also a fun little day for 2 reasons. First: I officially signed up for Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp! I’m so excited to give it a try! You pay 25 dollars and Tina sends you workouts for almost 2 months. I have heard great things about it and can’t wait to give it a go.

Second: I sent out my first Foodie Pen Pal package! Foodie Pen Pal is also something that everyone can participate it. It is organized by another blogger and when you sign up, you are assigned a pen pal each month. She gives you your match on the 5th and you need to ship out your food pressents to your pen pal by the 15th. FUN! In return, another pen pal will be sending you a gift!

As I said, anyone can participate. It’s just something fun to give a try!
