First Half Marathon = Conquered

This morning Brent and I FINISHED our Half Marathon. I am pumped. The race started at 7 this morning, so we were on the road by 615. I lined up at the 9 minute mark hoping that having some faster people around me would get me going. But, I ended up starting at a pace that was too fast. I ended up having to convince myself that I was going to go at my own pace and not try to BEAT everyone else that was running.

Around mile 5 or 6 my knee legit just said no thanks. It hasn’t done this in a while. Out of all of my long runs…it had to be this one that it just said see you later. I was limping a bit and struggling a lot for the next two miles. I stopped a few times to really stretch it out a bit, but it never seemed to calm down.

At mile marker 7, I started thinking in terms of the miles that we had left. However, my math was wrong and I for some reason though we only had 5 left at that time.

When we got to mile 9, the number of people cheering us on really started to pick up. Their signs…were AMAZING.

  • You trained for this longer than Kim Kardashian’s marriage lasted.
  • Run faster, I just farted.
  • Sweat is fat crying.
  • Run like you stole something.

Those were just a few favs, but people can be really creative. We finished and immediately grabbed a banana, which I fell in love with after the Rock N Run in Sept. Grabbed some water and headed over to the grassy to start stretching.

I think Brent wanted to shoot me because while we were sitting there chatting away, I couldn’t help but start thinking about the next one! I loved it. I am absolutely doing another one. Brent just responded, can we just talk about this tomorrow?? Haha.

Tired elves. After we gained some strength, we started walking around the tents that they have set up for a little after party. One of the things that they were giving away was chocolate milk. Brent found this out before the race and may or may not have been running towards that chocolate milk.

The route that we ran was really, really nice. It had several areas that were cobble stoned, which wasn’t amazing to run on towards the end. It took you all through downtown Orlando, and around all of the little lakes in the area. If you aren’t from Orlando, I would say this is a great way to get a good sense of what living in Orlando is like!

IMG_1182

They had tons and tons of volunteers and police officers marking the way. Every mile and a half there were Port A Johns and water stations to grab something. Even more towards the end. At mile 8.5 they had supplements to give you that extra boost. There were bands playing in several spots along the way. Tons of spectators cheering you on. They also had a medic about half way through.

At the end, there were tents to get ice wrapped on your shins, knees or whatever else and cooling stations that you just stuck your head into and it showered you with a light cool mist. Yes.

The weather, was perfect. There was a little chill in the air in the morning, and it warmed up to about 75. The light, long sleeve shirts that we wore were perfect. I had so much fun that I am sure this isn’t going to be my last half marathon. Only next time, I’m running for time!

Post race, I didn’t really want to eat or drink much. The thought of food was just…mer. After about an hour at home, I was ready for something light. I ended up making a little twist on a tuna melt, that was so good.

Ingredients:

1 Can Tuna 2 Tablespoons BBQ Sauce
1/4 Cucumber Chopped 1/2 Slice Provolone Cheese

Strange, but delish. Brent loved it. I love everything with Sonny’s BBQ sauce on it anyways,

I ended up resting for a bit of the day because tonight, we are going to a BIRTHDAY PARTY!!

A Tummy Twister

Yesterday, for lunch I had brought some pea soup to work thinking it would be a really easy thing to just heat up and munch on while I was shuffling through paperwork. It actually turned out really well because it was so easy to heat up and was absolutely delicious.

I spent the day running around as usual and left around 5 to speed back to Orlando to pick up my race bib and packet. EXCITING! When you walk into Track Shack, they have a large board set up with all of the bib numbers. You find your number, and tell the ladies in back so they can grab everything for you. When I looked up Brent and my numbers, I realized we had the SAME EXACT NUMBERS from Autumn Rock N Run. 1286 and 1287.

IMG_8941

I asked the ladies if that was normal, because they obviously didn’t select number based upon alphabetical order. They said it’s random number generated and that is actually EXTREMELY weird. I don’t know if this is a good omen or a bad one, but all I know is that every time I think about the race…my stomach twists up in knots.

So nervous for this run. It will honestly be the first time that I have intentionally ran 13 miles and in training, they don’t have to get up to that milage.

I also picked up some of the energy chews that I’m planning on munching on before and after the race. I have been trying out a few different chews and energy supplements for during the run and have found these to be the best. The energy gels just don’t sit well in my stomach.

I got the Shot Bloks for a pre-race energy boost because they tend to make your mouth water a bit, which isn’t exactly what you want while running. The GU Chomps are definitely best for energy along the way. They are easy to carry around, don’t make you thirsty and don’t make me nauseous.

And lastly, I picked up 2 of the 13.1 magnets for my car and Brent’s car. As soon as this run is over, I am crawling over to me car and slapping that 13.1 magnet on my car in celebration. This is going to be my little badge of achievement. BOOM.

I’m nervous and excited at the same time. But I figure that is the best mindset to be in when you are challenging yourself.

Any quick Pre-race tips?!

Too Much Thinking Time

On the way out the door, I headed to the kitchen to throw something together really quickly for lunch. I had bought some pears earlier this week and they are starting to get to the point or “Eat me or else.” So lunch was made around these pears.

I grabbed a large handful of spinach, chopped up a green pepper, and the pear and put it all in a To-Go box. Sprinkled some sunflower seeds and feta cheese on top. Grabbed my salad dressing container and called it lunch! It was actually really satisfying and the flavors went together really nicely.

As soon as I got to the office, there wasn’t a moment for me to sit and relax at all.

Oh my way home, I started to think about everything that had to get done before I headed out for the weekend. Between the dogs, cleaning, packing, work, my 11 mile run and a long list of little things, I’m not exactly sure how it’s going to be managed. The long ride really just gives me time to start freaking out about what I’m not doing while I’m driving. It’s slightly miserable.

I ended up stopping off at the post office to drop the Thanksgiving letters in the mail. As I was addressing them this afternoon, I was realizing how many different places these letters were actually going. It was NUTS. So out of the 10 letters that I sent out, I reached 7 different states. Not kidding.

  • Massachusetts
  • New York
  • Indiana
  • Illinois
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Virginia

Crazy right?! It just made me think about how spread out we have all gotten and yet I still talk to them on a regular basis. 🙂

Needless to say, as soon as I got home, I was starving and prepared to make nothing that took longer than 5 minutes. I just didn’t have the time. I had picked up some Cranberry English Muffins that I have been dying to try. So one of those went into the toaster while I mixed up the insides.

1 Can of Tuna 1/4 Green Pepper, Chopped
1/4 Teaspoon Onion Powder 1 Tablespoon Yellow Mustard
A Dab of Smart Balance Mayo

I topped it with a slice of american cheese and Dinner was served!

It was PACKED with green peppers and I loved it. The pop of cranberry from the english muffin added a lot of flavor to it. I would plan on putting some dried cranberries into the next batch of tuna that I make. It really added something different to it.

Tonight I’ve got a lot on the agenda, so I’m off to crackin!

Does driving give you a time to relax?? Or does it make you think about everything you haven’t done resulting in a mini freak out??

Absolutely, freak out.

Plans Foiled Again

I feel like every time I mention that I’m planning on making something for dinner, or for lunch, something happens and I end up not making what I said I was going to. Yesterday for lunch, I thought I was clever in coming up with this lovely little lunch that was going to be whipped together in the tiny kitchen there. Well, foiled again.

I ended up having lunch brought to the office yesterday, and my little mixings just sat in the lunch box next to my desk. So, I ended up having some DELICIOUS lasagna, a caesar salad and some garlic bread. YUMMY.

The killer is the desserts that they always bring along. Yesterday was this delicious White Chocolate Mouse, and today a Banana Delight Cake. I resisted though.

The mixings for lunch made its way home and ended up being dinner. I made a mini pizza with left over pasta sauce and some mozzarella cheese on an english muffin. Not too creative of a dinner, but it would have been AWESOME for a lunch on the go.

Morning

This morning I was up and running at 530. I had a meeting that I had to get to out in Melbourne first thing in the AM. The only thing I could bring myself to have that early was some coffee. I’m not really in the mood to eat anything substantial at that time. I grabbed one of the To You Snack bars and headed out the door.

Seriously. This mint chocolate chip granola bar was unlike anything I have ever had. It was delicious. I can’t even really describe it. Make sure you send your entry for Sizzle Wars in soon! Because you could have a whole case of these guys 🙂

For the rest of the day I’ve got some work to get finished and a meeting at 130 I’ve got to get to ASAP.

Hope your Wednesday’s are going well!!

Would you rather have a busy day that you are running out the door and going all day or a relaxed day that you have nothing planned??

Honestly, I need something planned for the day to get me going. I would much rather be running around crazy than sitting in front of the TV. So I try make sure I have something to get done each day to motivate me to get going. 🙂

Officially Pumpkin Nuts

It’s official, not even debatable, and I am willing to accept it. I have gone pumpkin crazy. I think once I open a can of pumpkin puree I feel the need to use it before it goes bad…and well…it just spirals out of control.

For dinner, I was inspired to make a Pumpkin Mac N Cheese. Seriously. Think of a light cheese topping with a twang of pumpkin and that’s what I made 🙂 Not nearly as bad for you as a typical Mac N Cheese either!

Ingredients:

8-10 Ounces Elbow Pasta 1/2 Cup Pumpkin Puree
1/2 Cup Low Sodium Chicken Broth 1/4 Cup Non Fat Milk
1 Teaspoon Butter 1/4 Teaspoon Onion Powder
Dash of Salt and Pepper 1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg
Pinch of Cinnamon 1/4 Teaspoon Pumpkin Pie Spice
Pinch of Ground Ginger 1/4 Cup Cheddar Cheese
Top with Parmesan Cheese

Directions:

1. Boil some water and cook the elbow macaroni according to the box directions. While the pasta is cooking, heat up the pumpkin puree, chicken broth, milk, butter, onion powder, nutmeg, salt and pepper, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, ground ginger and cheddar cheese in a small sauce pan.

2. Once the pasta is cooked and the sauce is heated throughout, drain the pasta and mix in the pumpkin sauce.

This will make a solid 3 servings, if not 4. I topped mine off with some grated parmesan cheese and sprinkled some cinnamon on top. The parmesan cheese really added some texture to it. It was delicious! I would definitely make this one again.

And juuuusst in case that wasn’t enough pumpkin for the week, I ended my meal with some pumpkin pie ice cream. I wish I was kidding.

After finishing that meal, I kind of wish today wasn’t my rest day for workouts. OH WELLLLL.

I told you I went pumpkin nuts. And guess what…I have a half a can that’s open and ready to be used.

Tonight, I’ve got some costume shopping to do for tomorrow and I feel some tea calling my name. I feel a bit of a cold coming on and I really need to nip that in the butt.

What’s your favorite pumpkin flavored dish?? Is it a dessert?? Dinner meal?? Or side dish??
